10 dolog, amit szeretek Japánban - 10 things I like in Japan -

A magyar verziót ezúttal a Határátkelőn olvashatjátok.

The last time I wrote on Határátkelő, a Hungarian blog about people who've moved abroad, I wrote about the things I didn't like in Hungary. So it's only fair that I also write about the things I like in the country where I live: Japan. Maybe that way you'll get a better picture of why I've come here. Of course, writing about the good things only won't give you the full story, but there's only so much one can do at once...

1. People look out more for each other: In a huge metropolis, like Tokyo, it's important to be tolerant to each other. And I'm not only talking about the fact that the staff gives me a smile in the stores, even strangers are rather nice to you. Or if you ask for directions, there's a good chance that they'll go with you for a while to make sure you get where you wanted to. They also make a habit of always wanting to guess what the others are thinking and make sure you don't hurt their feelings. They overdo it sometimes, but I like it. :)

2. Short waiting time in the stores: With this, I mean that unlike in the hipermarkets at home, where there are usually about 50 cashiers, but they never have more than two operating ones, here it's a different story. Or if you want to pay by credit card, their card reader always "has just broken down". Here they open up another cashier even when you just entered the waiting line, and you're the only one in it. On top of it, a lot of stores use cashiers that can calculate how much money was fed into them, and give back the change automatically. That way it's a lot faster than a human, and there's also a lot less chance for errors.

3. The language: This part is probably even more subjective than the others, but I just love the Japanese language itself. I like its simplicity, its logical grammar, the tons of onomatopoeic words, and words with the same pronounciation. It's an endless gold mine for people who like joking with words. I never miss the opportunities either! :D

4. The scenery: In case you're a frequent reader of my blog, you know how much I like to travel in Japan. I'm always awed by the mountains here, like when we went to Manza Onsen the other day. Or on Tokashiki, where my other huge favorite, the sea beach was right next to it. Be it the cherry blossoms, autumn, or some other season, you'll always be treated to fantastic views here.

5. The culture: I like the old Japan, the temples and shrines of ancient times. Wherever I go, I make sure to visit some of them. I also like how these things of old times come together with the modern world. I also like their weird habits, including the toilet slippers, and the countless cute mascots. :D

6. They don't want to rip you off: If you travel somewhere, you won't feel like everyone just wants to steal your money, be it a restaurant, museum, or pickpocket. For example, if you want to see a world heritage site, you won't have to pay several thousand yens, only a few hundred. You can even get into some places for free. It's a completely different attitude than what I saw in Barcelona, or Rome for instance.

7. The food: There are a lot of variations, and they all taste great! If I wanted to list all the things I like one-by-one, this post would never end. That's one of the reasons why I write about them on my blog every now and then. I like their fish (including sushi), okonomiyaki, noodles, meat dishes, sweets, and I also like that they eat vegetables with all of them. (Okay, maybe not with the sweets. :P)

8. The education: I'm sure the Japanese system is not perfect either, I can't see into all details yet. But one main difference compared to Hungary is that it's a cool thing to be a teacher here. And not just because of the long holidays, the salary is not bad either. Moreover, the aim of the whole system is not to produce as stupid people as possible.

9. General public safety: Tokyo has been one of the safest cities of the world for some time now, but generally Japanese people tend to stay away from crime too. For example, your bike won't get stolen just because you park it in the street. And you won't get beaten up all the time just because your skin color is different than the average. Also, your panties that are hung outside to dry have a higher chance to get stolen than your valuables. :D (It happened to one of my female friends.)

10. Low taxes: The Japanese people are enraged that the VAT has risen to 8%, while it's 27% in Hungary, for example. :D But even the income tax is microscopic compared to the one at home. And in general, the state steals less money from me here than either in Hungary or Germany. That's it for now, but I'll be back soon.
